But is it working efficiently? Is it consuming more gas than necessary? How do you know if you are losing heat through the valves or if the ceramic bed is saturated?

In this article on VOC treatment in the industry, I want to share a practical vision of this type of technology, from field experience, with the intention that we put ourselves in technical diagnostic mode. Because if you are operating a plant with RTO, you already know that every detail counts.

Why Do We Choose an RTO?

Regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) is probably the most versatile and robust technology when we talk about VOC treatment in high flow rates and medium concentrations. It is ideal in sectors such as the manufacture of paints, varnishes, automotive, fine chemicals or pharmaceuticals, where production processes generate variable but continuous emissions over time. You know it well: in many cases, RTO is the only technically and economically viable solution.

But you also know that the key is in its energy performance. A good RTO can reach up to 95% thermal efficiency if it is well designed, correctly sized, installed with criteria and maintained with rigor. This performance not only reduces the consumption of auxiliary fuel, but also directly impacts the operating costs and the carbon footprint of the plant.

And that’s where our technical doubts begin. Because many times, in practice, we are not continuously measuring critical variables such as:

– The temperature in the ceramic beds,

– The progressive pressure drop (which may indicate fouling or problems in the switching valves), or …

– The real gas retention time in the combustion chamber.

Nor do we always validate if the theoretical design values (residence time, minimum oxidation temperature, inlet flow) are maintained after years of operation.

Therefore, choosing an RTO is not just deciding on a technology: it is committing to a system that must be supervised, optimized and adjusted over time. A well-executed engineering does not end at start-up; it starts there. And if we want to maintain stable performance, in accordance with regulations, and with the lowest possible costs, we need to integrate a continuous improvement strategy: periodic audits, reliable instrumentation, valve control and, above all, a technical vision of the whole.

Is your VOC Treatment System Performing as it should?

Maybe it’s time to look again at those data that we stopped reviewing a long time ago.

Clues that indicate that something is not right: Here are some signs that your RTO system may not be performing as it should:

Gas consumption is higher than expected, although the treated air flow is constant.

The temperatures in the ceramic beds are not symmetrical or do not reach the target values.

There are frequent oscillations in the chamber temperature.

The valves are not synchronized or show irregular cycles.

The data from the SCADA system or the PLC show intermittent alarms not registered as critical faults.

What Can You Check without Stopping the Plant?

It is not always necessary to stop everything to diagnose.
